Après avoir mené la course en tête en alternance avecson compatriote Abel Kipsang, Timothy Cheruiyot a terminé la finale du 1 500m à la deuxième place, samedi 7 août. Le Kényan a été dépassé dans la dernière ligne droite par le Norvégien Jakob Ingebrigtsen, en or avec un nouveau record olympique et d'Europe (3'28''32). Cheruiyot, champion du monde en titre, a résisté de peu pour garder la médaille d'argent (3'29''01) devant le Britannique Josh Kerr (3'29''05). Abel Kipsang s'est classé 4e. Depuis le sacre d'Absel Kiprop en 2008 à Pékin, aucun Kényan n'était monté sur un podium olympique sur la distance.
