For well more than a year, claims about danger and disorder on a subway system largely emptied out during COVID and now filling up again have been thrust into the dysfunctional Crime Processing Machine that invariably interferes with all rational public discourse. “The bad old days are back!” shout some, citing anecdotes of slashings or horrifying pushes onto the tracks, insisting more cops are needed to restore confidence and protect riders. “Stop with the hysteria!” say others, adding that even if there is a bit of an uptick in violence, more cops aren’t the answer. Perception and reality on the trains: never the twain did meet.
