This Fourth of July, in a year when America is once again bitterly divided over how to deal with race, there’s a long-forgotten speech worth recalling. It’s the address given in 1897 by William James, America’s foremost champion of pragmatism and the leading public intellectual of his day, at the unveiling in Boston of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Civil War memorial to Col. Robert Gould Shaw and his all-Black Regiment.
