New York is all about real estate, starting with the first big property owner, John Jacob Astor. The building at 455 Fifth Ave. began life Nov. 8, 1914, as the fancy midtown outpost of Arnold Constable, a top-line department store, with six floors of goods and large sidewalk-facing windows. Across the opposite corner was 476 Fifth Ave., the New York Public Library, opened May 24, 1911, an offspring of the Astor Library, a bequest from old John Jacob’s will.
