Like so much of the rest of America, I exhaled when news came Tuesday that a jury had finished its work: It found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd. As a Black man with five decades in law enforcement, I called my wife, Diana, later that night as reports streamed in: Nighttime protests against continuing racial injustice in America were proceeding, including across our city’s bridges and through its streets, with solemnity and calm.
