The now-iconic character, the Lone Ranger, was created for a radio serial in 1933. According to the character’s back-story, a posse of six Texas Rangers were pursuing a gang of desperadoes when they were ambushed. Five were killed, but one “lone” Ranger left for dead survived, and was then found and nursed to health by the man who became his “faithful Indian companion,” Tonto. Thereafter, Tonto and the Lone Ranger teamed up — first to capture the criminals who killed his fellow Rangers, and then to pursue other Old West evildoers.
