Ghafouri set up a charity to support Yazidis diplaced by IS.Veteran Kurdish humanitarian Dr. Nemam Ghafouri died this week of Covid-19 at the age of 52, according to media reports. The Iraqi-born Kurdish cardiothoracic surgeon died in Sweden, where she sought refugee as a child after her father fought with the Peshmerga against Saddam Hussein.Ghafouri practised medicine on five continents before moving back to Iraq's Kurdistan autonomous region, where she founded a charity to aid the victims of the Yazidi genocide.Around 4,000 members of the ethnoreligious group were killed when the Islamic State [IS] group assaulted their native Sinjar.
