New York State’s health department is weighing a plan to close St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, turning the 257-bed facility that is currently the only hospital on the entire Rockaway peninsula into a “micro hospital,” with 15 beds, the Queens Daily Eagle reported. St. John’s serves a population of roughly 130,000 people, 90% of whom are either Medicare or Medicaid patients.
