Sundar made it to the playing XI after Team India decided to make three changes for the second Test of the five-match series against the Three Lions.
Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Akash Deep replaced Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, who were dropped, and Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested.
Sundar was selected in the team over the 'X-factor' Kuldeep Yadav because the Indian team management wanted to add some depth to the batting order in order to avoid collapses that the visitors suffered in the first Test.
The young Tamil Nadu all-rounder repaid the faith of the team management and played a crucial innings while batting at the No.8 spot. He scored 42 runs off 103 balls, with three fours and one six, before being dismissed by the man with the golden arm, Joe Root.
On the fourth ball of the 139th over, Joe Root bowled a quicker delivery on good length, and Sundar was expecting it to skid onto the bat.
However, the ball turned a bit, beat the bat, and shattered the stumps. The crowd went Roooooooooooottttttttttt after the fall of the wicket, and Joe Root celebrated aggressively, even giving a fiery send-off to Washington Sundar.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said that he is curious to see how England would approach their innings. He stated:
“I am convinced it is time more than runs. Ideally they would get to 600, for sure, but I think they would be looking to give England the last one hour.
“If they can take England to a stage in this game where all they can think about is a draw, then Gill will hope his bowlers can use that as pressure. One thing England haven’t done in this Bazball era is play for draws, so what will they do?”
Meanwhile, the former India head coach Ravi Shastri said that the English team will be in a dilemma on how they bat in their first innings. He said:
"When England come to bat they will be out of their comfort zone – they will have a dilemma with how to play. India can strive for some early wickets.
"They can have men in attacking positions, have in-out fields, and if they can strike before stumps tonight with two wickets...The ball is starting to grip for the spinners as well."
