RCB ban inevitable! BCCI moves ahead with IPS complaint on stampede

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken major action over the Bengaluru stampede incident involving the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise and the current champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), last month.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s troubles are all set to further deepen after the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) held the IPL 2025 winners responsible for the massive crowd gathering that led to the tragic stampede in Bengaluru, where 11 people lost their lives on June 4.

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) also gave relief to senior IPS officer Vikas Kumar, who was suspended by the Karnataka government after the incident. CAT cancelled the suspension of the IPS officer, saying he was wrongly blamed for the tragedy.

After CAT’s action, the RCB has found itself in serious trouble. Actually, the BCCI Ombudsman and Ethics Officer, Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra, has asked both RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to submit written responses following a formal complaint regarding the tragic Bengaluru stampede incident registered by the IPS officer Vikas Kumar.

The complaint accuses both RCB and KSCA of gross negligence in handling the crowd situation that led to the stampede in Bengaluru last month. Both RCB and KSCA have been given four weeks to submit their respective statements to the ombudsman.

The complainant also urged the BCCI Ombudsman to halt any sale of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise by its current owners until the stampede investigation is complete, citing concerns it could affect the ongoing probe into the tragic incident last month.

As reported by PTI, Justice Mishra wrote in his directive, “Looking at the gravity of the incident, it is considered appropriate that the Karnataka (State) Cricket Association, as well as the concerned franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, be asked to submit their written replies to the complaint.”

The directive further reads, “This complaint has been filed in relation to the unfortunate stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on 04.06.2025. The complaint alleges gross negligence and violation of safety norms by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise. The complainant submits that accountability must be fixed. Prayer has been made for the suspension of the RCB franchise and for invalidating ongoing sale negotiations.”

The BCCI Ombudsman has given Kumar 10 days’ time to file a rejoinder after receiving their response. One of the major concerns raised is the growing speculation that RCB’s current owners may be exploring a possible sale of the franchise.

With the stampede case still under investigation, Justice Mishra said that the complainant has expressed his concerns that this move could be an attempt to escape accountability. In response, the ombudsman has directed all parties to maintain the current ownership status until the inquiry concludes.

This decision has been taken to ensure transparency and prevent any party from avoiding potential consequences related to the Bengaluru stampede tragedy.
