DNA evidence has implicated three suspects in a 2017 rape case in Novato, police said.
The woman was assaulted after a social gathering near Ignacio Boulevard and Alameda Del Prado, said Lt. Alan Bates of the Novato Police Department. Investigators sent biological evidence in the case to the state Department of Justice crime laboratory in Richmond.

San Rafael resident Gilson Omel DeLeon Gramajo, 33, was arrested in San Rafael, while Los Angeles resident Miguel Antonio Cruz Revelo, 30, was arrested in Los Angeles. Police suspect that the third man, Fernando Godofredo Mendoza-Cruz, 30, of Novato, is in Central America.
Bail was set at $200,000 for DeLeon Gramajo and Cruz Revelo, and they were released after posting bonds.
In April, the Marin County District Attorney’s Office charged all three men with rape and sodomy by an “intoxicating, anesthetic and controlled substance,” according to court records.
DeLeon Gramajo was arraigned on May 28 and pleaded not guilty. His next court hearing is scheduled for July 15.
“Mr. Deleon Gramajo is a hard-working young father with no criminal history who completely denies these accusations,” said his defense attorney, Michael Coffino. “Contrary to the prosecution’s explanation why they delayed filing this case for nearly eight years, the technology was readily available in 2017 to distinguish contributors to a mixed DNA sample. The full extent of the police’s ineptitude has yet to be revealed. We look forward to challenging the questionable evidence underlying this prosecution and to clearing Mr. Deleon Gramajo’s name.”
Cruz Revelo was arraigned on June 20 and is scheduled to enter a plea on July 15. His case has been assigned to the public defender’s office.
