Ascension Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village is set to eliminate labor and delivery services, with officials saying it intends to consolidate birthing services and establish a “dedicated labor and delivery center of excellence” at a different hospital approximately 10 miles away.
In a statement, Ascension Illinois said “decisions made across the market are always led by what’s best for our patients.”
“By continually assessing care delivery models and needs, we can best achieve long-term sustainability, navigate our evolving healthcare environment, and support our talented associates and clinicians who are dedicated to advancing our Mission of providing exceptional care to all persons, with special attention to those most vulnerable,” the statement said in part.
Pending approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, “deliveries would be discontinued” at the hospital, the statement said. It went on to say that Ascension Illinois plans to establish Ascension Saint Alexius Women and Children’s Hospital in at 1555 Barrington Rd. in Hoffman Estates as a “dedicated labor and delivery center of excellence for our northwest region.”

The hospital said it was working with those set to be impacted at Elk Grove Village to find other positions within Ascension’s hospital network.
According to Ascension Alexian Brothers Hospital’s website, the hospital’s birthing center includes labor and delivery, pre and postpartum care, lactation and breastfeeding support, and 24/7 emergency OB care, along with perinatal services, maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal specialty care.
It wasn’t immediately clear if all birthing services at the hospital were being eliminated. Ascension Illinois did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for clarification.
Earlier this year, Prime Healthcare acquired eight Ascension Hospitals in Illinois. Ascension Saint Alexius and Ascension Alexian Brothers were not part of the deal and remain owned by Ascension, a non-profit Catholic health system.
