The Government has narrowly avoided defeat on its planned benefits cuts after watering down its welfare reforms bill following a series of crisis talks with leading rebels last week.
Fending off what would have been the biggest rebellion of his premiership, Sir Keir Starmer’s Government won the vote, with 335 MPs backing the bill, while 260 opposed it.
Hoping to win over potential Labour rebels last week, the Government offered a partial U-turn on the benefit cuts, which will protect existing claimants of personal independence payments (PIP) and the health element of universal credit.
The changes softened the impact of the bill, protecting some 370,000 existing PIP claimants who had been set to lose out following reassessment.
It also committed to a review of the system, involving disabled people and led by disabilities minister Sir Stephen Timms, and unfreezing the higher universal credit rate for those already claiming the health-related element.
After approval by MPs at its second reading this evening, the bill will now crash through all of its remaining stages in a single day on Wednesday next week.
Here, The i Paper takes a closer look at how all the MPs voted.
