‘Too early to leave’ – Liverpool star could fight for place despite exit rumours and £40m transfer

Andy Robertson may want to extend his stay at Liverpool despite the increased competition at left-back from Milos Kerkez.

That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist amid speculation over his fellow Scotsman’s future ahead of next season.

Premier League champions Liverpool have completed the signing of Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40million deal.

The Hungarian was of the best defenders last season and looks set to make an instant impact for the Reds under head coach Arne Slot.

However, Kerkez’s arrival has raised doubts over Robertson, who has been at Liverpool since 2017, signing from Hull City.

A Champions League, two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Carabao Cups have followed since, but his Anfield tenure could soon end.

talkSPORT understands Robertson is open to a move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid this summer.

But McCoist believes the 31-year-old will only see the arrival of Kerkez as an opportunity to retain his long-term starting role at left-back.

When asked on talkSPORT Breakfast where Robertson will play next season, McCoist said: “The answer to that would be whatever he wants because Andy Robertson has been fantastic, what a career.

“From starting off at Celtic as a kid… I don’t like using the word rejected but got let go, released, went to Queen’s Park. Dundee United, Hull, Liverpool, it’s one of the great Scottish success stories.

“80-odd caps, I’m not sure how many it is [84], goes to Liverpool, plays in a top, top team, wins leagues, cups, you name it. You could see it last season, he wasn’t starting every game.

“You could see there was maybe a train of thought that his time at Liverpool was perhaps coming to an end. Now, I don’t know. Andy Robertson could be the type of guy… He’ll have a chat with the head coach, of course he will.

“They’ve signed Kerkez from Bournemouth, who is a terrific player and a good signing. It wouldn’t surprise me if Andy Robertson rolls his sleeves up and says, ‘Right, I’m having some of this, I’m going nowhere.’

“But, if he doesn’t make that decision and decides, ‘I’m 31’… By far and away, he’s still got some great years ahead of him to play. The one thing he is, he’s extremely fit in terms of his ability going up and down that left-hand side.

“Truthfully, too early for him to go back to Scotland, I think. Obviously [Kieran] Tierney going back to Celtic, you think it would eliminate that club straightaway.”

Amid the interest from Atletico, McCoist hinted that a move outside of England could be an option for Robertson.

“My point being, could he follow in the footsteps of the likes of a [Billy] Gilmour, [Scott] McTominay [both at Napoli], Che Adams [at Torino], boys like that…

“100 per cent, there would be absolutely shortage of offers for Andy Robertson, at home or indeed abroad.

“Now, I don’t know whether he maybe fancies two or three years abroad. If he did, nobody on the planet could begrudge him.

“He has been a fantastic servant to Liverpool, Scotland, and wherever he’s been.”

Robertson joined Liverpool in a £10m deal from Hull and has made 342 appearances in all competitions.

The Scotland international played a key role in their league title win at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, their first in 30 years.

However, many fans noticed a dip in quality last season, and club legend Jamie Carragher suggested it was time to part ways.

Kerkez has arrived a whole decade younger than Robertson, whose future at Liverpool remains undecided.
