PATRICK Mahomes and his wife Brittany have suffered a setback this week.
The Kansas City Chiefs power couple are building an empire around Mahomes‘ job.
They have also built their dream home and had the joy of welcoming their third child this year.
But not all has gone to plan for Mahomes when it comes to sports in 2025.
He suffered a brutal Super Bowl defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles in February.
That 40-22 loss in New Orleans dashed his hopes of a historic three-peat.
Around that time, Mahomes was also asked about his and Brittany’s hopes of being part of a WNBA expansion franchise.
The couple are already investors in the Kansas City Current soccer team.
Mahomes said during Super Bowl week, “You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports that have been in the city, especially women’s sports.
“I’ve seen it first hand with the Kansas City Current.
“I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.
“That’s just the kind of atmosphere that we have in Kansas City.
“I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”
The couple met with the WNBA in October about a potential expansion franchise in Kansas City.
But the Sports Business Journal reported in February that the league was looking elsewhere.
Cleveland was being lined up for the next expansion team, the outlet said.
They quoted a source as saying, “The WNBA has re-thought its original plan of adding just one team and could award one or two more franchises to bring its league total to 18 clubs.
“The presumed leaders for the second and third teams are Philadelphia, Houston, Nashville, Detroit and Miami.”
The decision was finally made official this week in a blow to the Mahomes.
The Cleveland Rockers will return to the league in 2028.
The team previously played between 1997 and 2003.
And the WNBA also announced that the next two cities to get teams would be Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030.
That means Kansas City will have to wait a while if they want to host a WNBA side.
Quarterback Mahomes will soon turn his attention back to his No. 1 focus.
Kansas City Chiefs training camp begins on July 22.
And the team will travel to Brazil for a Week 1 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers.
