Olivia Munn Details Stepfathers Alleged Abuse: Power in Fighting Back

Olivia Munn says she was forced to become a fighter after she became a victim of her former stepfather’s alleged abuse.

“[He was] just a bad guy. He was Air Force and really abusive, and lived with a lot of fear,” Munn, 44, claimed of her former stepfather on the Monday, June 30, episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast.

According to the actress, after Munn’s parents got divorced when she was 2, her mother married a member of the United States Air Force. Munn claimed that, while living with her stepfather, on a scale of one to 10 her anxiety was at “a constant nine.”

The X-Men: Apocalypse star recalled one Christmas in Utah, where her family had relocated after her mom married her stepdad and lived until 1986, when her stepfather allegedly beat her brother over a sled.

“My older brother Jimmy, who was just one of those kids that parents probably get annoyed with, my stepdad was like, ‘I made this for you guys. It took me all this time to make it,’” Munn said. “And Jimmy was looking and goes, ‘You didn’t make this.’ [My stepdad said,] ‘Yes, I did.’ And [Jimmy] looks again, he’s looking around and goes, ‘You didn’t make this.’”

Munn continued, “And then he beat the s*** out of him on Christmas Day.”

Though Munn said that she felt “powerless” at many points with her stepdad, she eventually “became such a fighter.” She recalled her decision to stop “calling him ‘Dad’ or talking to him at all” when she was 15 years old, which led to an altercation with her stepfather.

“I was walking up the stairs, and he was walking down the stairs. And I just kept looking down at the stairs, and he stops me and he says, ‘I’m sick and tired of you not talking to me.’ And then I looked at him, I rolled my eyes and kept walking, and he grabs me,” she claimed. “And he turns me around and he slaps me so hard that my head hit one of the framed family photos that went up along the staircase and like, cut my eye. I remember looking at him with tears coming down, but not sad tears, but pain tears.”

Despite the pain, Munn said that she “rolled my eyes again,” which prompted her stepdad to look at her with a “piercing” gaze. However, she said that she simply stared back at him.

“That solidified for me that there’s a lot of power in fighting back. And so, in my life, I would fight back a lot, sometimes to my own detriment,” she concluded.

Her mother eventually divorced her allegedly abusive second husband when Munn was 16 years old and later remarried again. Munn, who said on the podcast that her current stepfather is “amazing,” previously opened up about her former stepdad’s alleged verbal abuse in a 2012 interview with Ocean Drive.

“He would always say, ‘You’re not smart enough, pretty enough, you have no talent,’ and it would knock me down, but it wouldn’t keep me down,” she said, calling him “the Devil.”

However, Munn said that the alleged abuse helped her discover her acting talents.

“When [my stepfather] would be screaming his head off in the living room, I would hustle everybody into my room and launch into imitations of teachers or do scenes from movies,” she explained. “And that would take their minds off of the hell that was happening down the hall.
