Rohit Sharma is tactical genius, Virat Kohli is...: Ravichandran Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy drop blunt captaincy verdict

After India's humiliating exit from the group stages of the 2021 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli ended his reign as the Indian captain. Soon, the BCCI decided to remove him from ODI captaincy as well, as it marked Rohit Sharma's appointment as India's white-ball skipper.

Under Rohit Sharma's captaincy stint with the Indian side, they have favourable results to their name, alongside winning several ICC titles.

Meanwhile, speaking on Ashwin's YouTube show, Varun Chakravarthy said that Rohit is a tactical genius and Virat Kohli is a motivational skipper.

“Virat is a true leader. When you just see him, when you just observe what he is doing and you must have also noticed the match against Pakistan, you were also there. We lost first two wickets to Shaheen Shah Afridi. But when Virat came, he stepped down and hit Shaheen for six and it was so inspiring and motivational, but how he is giving it back and all this," said Varun Chakravarthy.

"So Virat is exceptional, as in the way he can he can cheer up everyone. So the main thing was whenever I spoke to him his answers were very motivational and in that thing and when I spoke to Rohit Sharma, it was very tactical. So it was two different parts," he added.

Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy of the Indian white-ball side after Virat Kohli stepped down post the Indian team's drastic performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Sharma, who was a veteran on the side, took the captain's band.

Rohit can be called the master of white-ball captaincy, as he is also the second-most successful Indian white-ball skipper after MS Dhoni.

Having led India in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma helped India advance unbeaten into the finals of the competition. In the final, Rohit Sharma's men lost the match to the Australians on their own soil.

However, next, he led them in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where India was captained by Rohit Sharma, and they advanced into the finals unbeaten before defeating the Proteas in a neck-to-neck encounter to claim India's second ICC T20 World Cup title. After this, he went on to lead India to another ICC title in less than a year, as India lifted the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after defeating New Zealand in the final.

Virat Kohli—The revolutionary Test skipper for India

Virat Kohli took over as the Indian Test captain after MS Dhoni retired from the longest format of the game. The India tour of Australia in 2014/15 marked the beginning of Virat Kohli's captaincy in the longest format of the game.

Virat took over as the captain of the Indian Test side, as he smashed a stunning 600 runs in the series with twin centuries at Adelaide, one of his favourite arenas in world cricket. Post this, Kohli hit his best prime with the bat; from 2016 to 2019, he scored 4208 runs at an average of 66.79 with 16 centuries and 10 half-centuries. He also has 7 double-hundreds, the most by a test skipper.

Until Virat Kohli took over as the captain of the Indian test side, India was ranked 8th in the ICC Test rankings. However, it was under Virat's reign that India got the status of the No. 1-ranked Indian test side. Under him, India has played in 68 test matches, of which they have managed to win 40 games.

He remains India's most successful Test captain and only the likes of Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, and Graeme Smith have registered more wins as the Test skipper.

Ravichandran Ashwin has played under both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's captaincy

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the very few players to have scored 3000+ runs alongside taking 500+ wickets in the longest format of the game.

He has played under both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during their captaincy stints. Ashwin announced his retirement in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their Test retirements recently before the onset of the series against England.

Ravi Ashwin has supported the claim made by Varun Chakravarthy on his YouTube talk show on the captaincy of the two legendary Indian skippers.

“So one is inspirational, the other one more tactical, which I kind of resonate. Because Virat goes and does things. He is there in your eye line, the way he trains, the way he practices, what he does.

But Rohit does understand a lot more tactics in terms of what he does. Everything is tactical in terms of field placement, this batsman, this shot and all that,” added the former Indian spinner.
