India started their five-match Test series in England with the first match, which was played at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds. The match marked a huge criticism for the Indian bowlers as well as the fielders, who dropped several catches across both innings of the match.
The bowlers were largely criticized for their performance in Leeds, as the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj could not defend the target of 371 runs on Day 5 of the match against England.
However, Jasprit Bumrah was the only bowler who looked good, as he delivered with a five-for in the first innings. To this, Jamie Smith, the England wicket-keeper batsman who built the last partnership alongside Joe Root, revealed his fear of Bumrah's bowling.
At the end of Day 5, Bumrah was handed the ball by the Indian skipper Shubman Gill, who hoped to see some magic with the ball from his end. This raised concerns for Jamie Smith, who then launched his attack on Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled from the other end.
“The runs at that point (when Smith decided to go after Jadeja) were not too many, so I wasn't expecting him (Bumrah) to come on and bowl (with the new ball), but you're just never quite sure, especially in cricket," said Jamie Smith on ESPNCricinfo.
"You don't know what will happen. I always back our tail, but there could be a couple of decent balls, and suddenly you're eight down and the pressure's back on you again," added the English batter.
"It was nice to just get it done and move on. I knew there was a new ball coming, and it looks as though I'd exposed Chris Woakes (at No. 8) but, at that point, if I'd hit another couple of sixes in that over, you're taking all the momentum into the new ball. The second new ball can bring wickets, but it can increase the scoring rate as well. There's always a little bit of calculated thinking behind it.”
He smashed a few massive hits off Ravindra Jadeja's bowling to end the match early for England, before Bumrah could stir up any threat with the ball.
Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket haul in Leeds
Jasprit Bumrah on Day 2 of the Leeds test oozed fire from the very first over, as he dismissed England opener Zak Crawley for 4 runs in the final delivery of his opening over with the new ball.
Despite several catches dropped by both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja, Bumrah didn't lose his mark and imposed a continuous threat on the opposition. In his second return spell, he dismissed Ben Duckett for 62 runs.
He closed a stunning day with 3 wickets, as he dismissed English veteran Joe Root for 28 runs, as he was caught at first slip. This was the 10th time Root was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.
Harry Brook was dismissed in Bumrah's last over as well, only to be saved by a no-ball bowled by the Indian speedster. Bumrah picked the other two wickets with the English tail, where he cleaned up Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue to give India a 6-run lead at the end of the first England innings.
Bumrah's record in England in Tests
Jasprit Bumrah has an exceptional record in SENA countries, as he is the leading wicket-taker with 150+ wickets in the longest format of the game. He surpassed even greats like Wasim Akram and Chaminda Vaas.
Bumrah has worked wonders with the format, as he has picked 42 wickets in England after playing 10 matches on English soil. He averages 26.47 in the island nation, with the best bowling figures of 5/64.
