The International Cricket Council has tightened the screws against the USA Cricket Association for a turbulent condition over the administrative and financial irregularities within the board.
Sources close to the situation have hinted that the ICC has grown increasingly frustrated with the USA Cricket board's successive failures to meet the standards, as per a report in the Times of India. Unsettled financial conditions, continued dissatisfaction between the board members, and a lack of proper administration have been major concerns.
The ICC has raised some serious concerns over the Board's ability to manage the sport effectively, and hence, they were placed under a formal notice from July 2024, which was after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by USAC jointly with the West Indies Cricket Board.
The ICC might be preparing to take decisive action on the USA Cricket Board as the 12-month governance notice period is nearing its end in July 2025.
Reports suggest that the international governing body might consider suspending the national body if there are no vital leadership alterations observed until the next ICC Annual Conference to be held in July.
The ICC had placed a normalisation committee to oversee the conditions within the USA Cricket Board. Since the ICC cited the US boards' lack of "fit for purpose" governance, the reports have also revealed that no such significant change has been observed ever since the issuing of the notice.
ICC delegation for the Olympics oversees the USA Cricket dysfunction
USA Cricket was reinstated as an associate member by the ICC back in 2019 after their years of suspension; however, the recent cricket board has also faced similar accusations related to mismanagement or lack of financial transparency.
An ICC delegation recently visited Los Angeles earlier in June for meetings related to the USA Olympics and the Paralympic Committee. These meetings also included the members of the USA Cricket normalisation committee, and also senior members of the USAC governing body.
They have supposedly addressed the ongoing dysfunction and the persistence of the internal disputes within the USA Cricket Board. This is not about bureaucratic technicalities but about the transparency of US cricket communities' governance concerning the game.
“The ICC’s position is clear: effective governance is non-negotiable, especially ahead of cricket's return to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028," said an official close to the ICC.
The United States Cricket Board co-hosted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024
The US Cricket Board held its most significant cricket tournament back in 2024, when they co-hosted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June 2024. The World Cup saw several top teams like India, Australia, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa as participating members.
India were the champions of the T20 World Cup 2024 after they defeated the South African side in a close-knit final. The USA team also made a significant rise as they went on to feature in the Super-8 stage matches. This was US cricket's best performance in an ICC event in all these years.
