A reunion between 40-year-old point guard Chris Paul and the Phoenix Suns is on the table, NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported on Sunday.
Paul, who played three seasons in Phoenix from 2020-23, is a free agent who reportedly prefers to stay closer to family on the West Coast.
He spent last season with the San Antonio Spurs, but their backcourt is loaded after they traded for point De’Aaron Fox last deadline and drafted guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick on Wednesday.
The Stein Line reported that a Paul-Suns pairing is possible if fellow free agent point guard Tyus Jones departs.

Paul was instrumental in the Suns’ emergence from Bubble darlings to Western Conference champions. He made the All-NBA Second Team in 2020-21, co-starring with Devin Booker as the Suns reached their first NBA Finals since 1992-93.
He was a two-time All-Star and All-NBA honoree with the Suns, although injuries limited him to 59 games in his third and final season with the team. After a second round playoff exit, the Suns fired head coach Monty Williams and traded Paul to the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal that brought Bradley Beal to Phoenix. Paul was then rerouted to the Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole.
Paul averaged 15.1 points, 9.5 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game while playing for the Suns.
In San Antonio last season, the veteran played all 82 games for the first time in his career, putting up 8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game while shooting 42.7% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc. He signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Spurs last offseason.
Which other teams have reported interest in Chris Paul?
The Suns were not the only suitor The Stein Line reported for Paul, as the Los Angeles Clippers have also weighed a reunion. Paul played six seasons for Los Angeles from 2011-17, making the All-Star Game five times. His family has remained in L.A. while he’s played elsewhere.
The Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets have also reportedly shown interest, although they have a proximity challenge.
ESPN published a free agency preview on Sunday, and for both the Suns and Clippers, analysts listed Paul as a player they should sign.
Front office insider Bobby Marks wrote:
“Sign Chris Paul to a one-year, $3.6 million contract. How fitting would it be for the Suns to sign the player they traded for Beal? The 40-year-old Paul could not only be a mentor to Jalen Green but also help Phoenix on the court. In addition to playing 82 games in 2024-25, Paul has averaged at least seven assists in four of the past five seasons.”
The Suns have worked on remaking their roster this offseason, trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and bringing in Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and the No. 10 pick. Phoenix drafted Duke center Khaman Maluach and traded the N0. 29 pick plus a future first-rounder for Charlotte center Mark Williams. They have more work to do to get under the second apron.
NBA free agency officially gets underway on Monday at 3 p.m. MST.
