The Corner Gallery’s front windows are going to be overflowing with art for the month of July.
Usually featuring the work of one or two individuals, the space will be packed with a creative, eclectic and unthemed show by seven artists, collectively known as the Seven Sisters.
These seven women from Willits, Redwood Valley and Ukiah first shared the gallery space at the Willits Center for the Arts in 2017. They are Elizabeth Raybee, Esther Siegel, Nancy Simpson, Nan Trichler, Julie Beardsley, Carolyn Bakewell and Laura Fogg.
From that very successful experience they forged a lasting and collaborative friendship which involves regular meetings, potluck meals and lots of sharing and support related to their individual art practices… and lives. They have since put together three more shows in Ukiah and Willits.
This upcoming show in Ukiah will consist of 100 percent new and never-before-seen-in-public work by all of the artists. Each woman maintains an active art practice, and all have been working for at least half a year to contribute to what will be a fresh and energetic experience for viewers. The lack of a theme is intentional… each of the artists advocated strongly for free reign to do her own thing without constraints.
Textile artist Nancy Simpson says, “I work alone in my studio and don’t see too many people in my extremely remote location. I like to get feedback on my art… that’s the important thing about participating in this show. It’s great to have people see it. I ask myself why I am making art if I don’t share it?”
Julie Beardsley is a painter and jewelry maker among other things. She continues Nancy’s thread… “The Seven Sisters group has been a real inspiration since we all work in different mediums. The other six women are so talented, and it gives me energy to be part of this group. Because of what I draw from all of them, I find that I want to focus on doing more art going forward. Doing art is kind of an antidote to reacting to other stuff that is going on.”
Mosaic artist Elizabeth Raybee agrees about the benefits of belonging to this group. “I really love the group and everyone in it,” she says. “It’s funny that most of us take things apart and put them back together again… which kind of fits in with the crazy times we’re living in.” Elizabeth is framing four mosaic pieces that she made for a beehive commission many years ago. She explains, “The people who commissioned it in 2011 canceled, so I kind of abandoned the project… the panels have just been sitting in my shop for all those years. But now it’s the time to get them out into the world as individual mosaics.”
The Seven Sisters show will open to the public from July 1 through July 26.
The Friday opening celebration will be on the second Friday of the month, July 11, on account of the Fourth of July holiday. Hours will be from 5-8pm. Live guitar music will be presented throughout the evening by Teddy Keez.
The Corner Gallery is located at 201 S. State St. in Ukiah. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
