Beloved grocery chain ‘better than Costco’ to open new store as part of expansion after buying closed Winn-Dixie site

A BELOVED grocery chain that is “better than Costco” is opening a new store after buying a closed Winn-Dixie site.

The latest site comes as the retailer expands across the country with 200 fresh sites expected to open by the end of the year.

Aldi has announced the unveiling of its latest grocery store will be at 961 E. Eau Gallie Blvd., in Melbourne on July 10.

This will be the ninth Aldi in Brevard, after the retailer bought and repurposed the former Winn-Dixie site in 2024.

The news has been warmly welcomed by locals with one excited resident hailing Aldi croissants as “the best” and “better than Costco“.

In a post on X she said: “Aldi’s has the best croissants. Better than Costco.

“I’ve been making roast beef sandwiches with cheese in their croissants (and a few condiments) and it’s so much better and cheaper. I’m done with these expensive cold sandwich places.”

This comes as Aldi plans to open 225 new stores by the end of 2025 and 800 by the end of 2028.

The retailer is one of the fastest growing supermarket chains in the US, with 10 new stores opening across six states by the end of the month.

The include Florida, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

Nine of these had their grand openings Thursday.

Shoppers were given a sneak peek of the new store and were invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

A large part of this expansion is thanks to Aldi’s acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores.

Through the deal, Aldi gained about 400 shops across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.

    NEW STORE CHANGES

The discount retailer plans to reopen some of the stores under the Winn-Dixie name, and convert the others into smaller Aldi shops.

About 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores will be converted by 2027.

Customers should expect to see some changes with new Aldi stores offering cheaper prices than the former Winn-Dixies store.

But there may also be fewer options as Aldi shops are typically smaller than other major retailers with over 90 per cent of its products “own-label”.
