The Violet Hour, a revered Wicker Park establishment that was one named among the best bars in the U.S., has closed its doors.
The famous cocktail bar, 1520 N. Damen Ave., announced its closure on Friday after 18 years in business. Over its nearly two decades, the Violet Hour came to be known for its discreet unmarked door and famous “house rules,” including no cell phones, no cosmopolitans and no Budweiser.
Earlier in June, the bar posted on Facebook it would be closed “until further notice” following weeks of building repairs and ongoing discussions with their landlord. In an update Friday, the bar revealed it was “regretfully unable to reach a resolution” with the landlord “despite extensive efforts and negotiations.”
The Violet Hour opened in 2007 and was known for being an influential leader in the Chicago cocktail scene. It won the James Beard Award in 2015 for Outstanding Bar Program and frequently lands on “best bar lists” locally and across the U.S.
