Syria on brink of joining Abraham Accords

Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) reported today, Friday, June 27, that the White House is seeking to expand the Abraham Accords with Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Lebanon, following the end of hostilities between Israel and Iran.

US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, stated that the current Syrian administration is quietly negotiating with Israel on all issues.

Barrack considered during an interview with Al Jazeera today that the government of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa does not want war with Israel.

He called for giving the new Syrian administration a chance.

Social media users shared images of a billboard displayed in Tel Aviv, carrying the phrase: “Abraham Alliance… It’s time for a new Middle East.”

Under this phrase is an AI-generated image of Arab leaders flanked by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The billboard features images of 13 leaders, including the transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff has stated that his country is conducting what he described as “successful” talks with Arab countries regarding joining the Abraham Accords.

Witkoff, during a dialogue with US media on June 25, predicted a flood of announcements in the coming weeks regarding this, adding, “We hope that the normalization will include countries that might not have been thought of as considering normalization one day.”

He clarified that Washington seeks to build on this to establish a foundation for all that is positive in the Middle East and to be a factor for stability in that region of the world.

Direct dialogue between Syria and Israel

Transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa stated on June 25 that work is underway to stop Israeli aggression through indirect negotiations with Israel via international mediators.

The Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported that the Israeli National Security Council Chairman, Tzachi Hanegbi, is managing a direct dialogue between the Syrian government and Israel, proposing Syria’s entry into normalization agreements.

According to the newspaper, on June 24, Hanegbi said in a secret meeting for Knesset members that Syria and Lebanon are candidates for entering the Abraham Accords.

He added that there is a direct dialogue with Syria at all levels, including with the transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and it is not an indirect dialogue as previously published.

He confirmed during the meeting held on June 22, according to the newspaper, that he personally manages the dialogue involving security and political coordination.

Regarding the withdrawal from the buffer zone with Syria, the National Security Council Chairman said, “If there is normalization, we will consider things.”

Transitional President al-Sharaa had indicated in response to a question from a journalist during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on May 7 that indirect negotiations via mediators are ongoing to reduce tensions between Syria and Israel, without naming the mediator.

Reuters previously reported from three sources that the UAE had established an undeclared communication channel between Syria and Israel, coinciding with efforts by the new Syrian leadership to gain regional support for managing the strained relationship with Tel Aviv.

    What are the Abraham Accords?

The term “Abraham” refers to the establishment of values of tolerance, dialogue, and coexistence among different peoples and religions in the Middle East and the world, aiming to enhance a culture of peace, according to the texts of the agreements with Arab countries.

The term was first used during the signing of the normalization agreement between the UAE, Bahrain, and Israel under US sponsorship, attributed to the prophet Abraham, symbolizing what unites the three Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.

The Abraham Accords were first signed between Israel and both the UAE and Bahrain at the White House on September 15, 2020, in the presence of President Trump during his previous term, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani.

On October 23, 2020, Trump announced Sudan’s normalization of relations with Israel, which came via a trilateral US-Israeli-Sudanese statement.

On December 10, 2020, Trump announced the signing of a peace agreement between Morocco and Israel.
