FAO: Syria faces worst agricultural season in 60 years

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) described the harsh climatic conditions experienced during the current agricultural season in Syria as “the worst” in nearly 60 years.

Haya Abu Assaf, assistant representative of the FAO in Syria, told France Press that almost 75% of the planted areas in Syria and the natural pastures for livestock production have been affected, including about 2.5 million hectares of wheat affected by the severe weather conditions.

Abu Assaf mentioned that Syria experienced a short winter and a decrease in rainfall levels, resulting in about 95% of rain-fed wheat being affected, while irrigated wheat is expected to yield 30% to 40% less than the normal rate, according to FAO indicators.

She warned that the wheat production deficit could reach between 2.5 to 2.7 million tons, putting 16.3 million people in Syria at risk of food insecurity this year, and predicted that this would force Syria to rely on imports.

The General Grain Establishment announced on June 24 that the total quantities received from the 2025 wheat crop amounted to 212,826 tons across all Syrian provinces.

Hassan Mohammad al-Othman, the director general of the General Grain Establishment, explained that the most productive wheat regions are concentrated in the al-Ghab Plain between Idlib and Hama provinces, which provides a “good production” in drought years; as well as in Aleppo where irrigation channels from the Euphrates River exist.

Al-Othman indicated that the produced wheat is characterized by its quality and distinctive specifications in terms of the complete ripeness of the wheat grain and its achieving a high weight, in both hard and soft varieties.

The General Authority for Land and Sea Ports banned the entry of wheat from all land and sea crossings into Syria during the 2025 season, based on a request from the Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry.

The official news agency “SANA” reported that this decision aims to prevent overlap in purchases between local and imported wheat during the purchasing season, due to the support provided by the presidency to wheat farmers.

The ministry also confirmed its commitment to ensuring that Syrian farmers receive their full rights in delivering their wheat crop for the current year without obstacles.

The current weather and economic conditions threaten a decrease in the productivity of the wheat season this year in Syria, amid uncertainty about the government’s alternatives for securing the commodity from multiple sources as has been customary in previous years, which may impact the bread, the essential item on citizens’ tables.
