Former Auburn guard Miles Kelly is headed to the Lone Star State.
According to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania, Kelly has agreed to a 2-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks. He will split his time during the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season between the Mavericks and the organization’s G League affiliate, the Texas Legends.
Kelly will be eligible to participate in up to 50 NBA games with the Mavs next season. If he is kept on his 2-way deal throughout the entire season, he would not be eligible to play in any postseason games.
Two-way players typically earn half of the league’s rookie minimum salary. That number was just under $579,000 during the 2024-25 season. Their contract does not count against the salary cap, and their team can choose to convert their deal to a standard contract at any time. Recent NBA Champion Lu Dort began his career as an undrafted free agent who signed a 2-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019.
Kelly only spent 1 season at Auburn, but he played a pivotal role in one of the greatest teams in Auburn basketball history. He averaged 28 minutes a night while making starts in 36 of his 38 appearances. He averaged 11.3 points per game and shot 37.8% from beyond the 3-point line. After 3 seasons at Georgia Tech, Kelly joined the Tigers and helped lead a 32-win team to the Final Four.
He’ll find himself in an interesting position with the Mavericks.
Two seasons ago, Dallas won 50 games and appeared in the NBA Finals. Last season, the franchise pulled the plug on the Luka Doncic experience and shipped him to Los Angeles for a package that included Anthony Davis. After trading Doncic, Davis dealt with injury issues and star guard Kyrie Irving tore his ACL.
That injury is projected to keep Irving on the shelf for the bulk of the 2025-26 campaign. Dallas remarkably won the NBA Draft lottery and picked Cooper Flagg first overall, giving the franchise a clear superstar to build around for the future, but the path next season isn’t quite as clear.
Dallas should make the playoffs, but can it win an NBA title? The Mavericks are projected to be over the luxury tax, making them a repeater team. They need a ball-handler to bridge the gap between now and Irving’s return, and they’ll likely look for cost-controlled options to fill out the roster.
As a rangy wing, Kelly could benefit from the situation.
Elsewhere, former Auburn big man Dylan Cardwell also agreed to a 2-way deal. He will join the Sacramento Kings.
Former Auburn guard Miles Kelly reportedly lands 2-way deal with recent NBA Finals participant Saturday Down South.
