Verstappen loses Red Bull race engineer Lambiase for Austrian GP

In a surprising development ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull has announced that Gianpiero Lambiase, Max Verstappen’s long-time race engineer and Head of Racing, will be absent from this weekend’s race at the Red Bull Ring due to personal circumstances.

The absence of Lambiase, a pivotal figure in Verstappen’s four world championship triumphs, marks the first time since the Dutchman joined Red Bull in 2016 that he will compete without his trusted engineer by his side

In Lambiase’s absence, Red Bull has turned to Simon Rennie, an experienced and respected figure within the team, to assume race engineer duties.

Rennie will be Verstappen’s voice on the radio throughout the weekend, taking over both technical communications and in-race strategy calls.

Rennie, who began his F1 career with Renault in 2004, has worked with a number of top drivers, including Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, Mark Webber, and Daniel Ricciardo.

After Ricciardo’s departure from Red Bull, the British engineer shifted to a factory-based role but has remained an integral part of the team's technical operation. His familiarity with Red Bull's procedures and personnel makes him a natural choice to step in during Lambiase’s absence.

Lambiase’s duties in recent seasons have expanded beyond Verstappen’s garage, reflecting his elevated status as Red Bull’s Head of Racing. His absence this weekend will therefore be felt not only on Verstappen’s side of the garage but across the broader trackside engineering team.

A Disruption at a Critical Moment

The timing of Lambiase’s absence could be challenging for Red Bull, as the Austrian Grand Prix kicks off a crucial double-header alongside next week’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

These two races are expected to be decisive in determining whether Red Bull can maintain its championship lead and fend off mounting pressure from McLaren and Mercedes.

Verstappen and Lambiase have developed a famously direct and highly effective working relationship, with their candid radio exchanges often reflecting a deep level of trust and understanding.

Whether that seamless synergy can be replicated this weekend remains to be seen, though Rennie’s experience should help mitigate any potential disruption. In the meantime, all eyes will be on how Verstappen adapts without his usual voice guiding him from the pit wall at one of the team’s most important home races.
