Palmeiras vs Botafogo predictions, odds and betting tips

The South American sides have taken the Club World Cup seriously and two of the Brazilian representatives will go head-to-head in the round of 16 this weekend.

Palmeiras topped Group A ahead of Inter Miami, while Botafogo squeezed through as Group B runners-up. Which way will this one go at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia?

    Palmeiras vs Botafogo predictions

There are several requirements for this revamped and enlarged Club World Cup to be considered a success.

First up, it is integral for all 32 participants to want to be involved. There was some doubt over how seriously the European teams would take the tournament, but the substantial prize money on offer has strengthened their desire to go far.

Secondly, the Club World Cup needs to be appointment viewing on television and at the stadiums. On this front, the story is a little more mixed.

The tournament is not being followed as closely in Europe as the World Cup, European Championship or Champions League would be. There is more interest in certain other regions around the globe, but this is by no means universal. Attendances in the USA have been mixed.

Finally, for the competition to be deemed a welcome additional to the calendar, it must be competitive.

The reason many people find the Club World Cup intriguing is the opportunity it offers to watch teams from different continents butt heads in a meaningful game. No one wants to see a round of 16 made up almost exclusively of European teams.

Thankfully, that has not proved to be the case this time. For that, we must in large part thank the Brazilian clubs. All four representatives from South America’s biggest country have advanced to the knockout phase, which begins with Palmeiras vs Botafogo on Saturday.

Palmeiras finished top of Group A after drawing with Porto and Inter Miami, and beating Al Ahly.

They were trailing Inter Miami 2-0 on matchday three when a loss would have bumped them down to second, but two late goals saw them earn the point they needed to win the group.

Botafogo were runners-up in Group B. They beat Seattle Sounders and Paris Saint-Germain in their first two games, before sealing a place in the knockout rounds after a 1-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid (a heavier defeat would have put Atletico through instead).

One Brazilian club will exit the competition in Philadelphia, but Palmeiras and Botafogo will give everything to extend their participation.

“We’ve been through a lot in recent times [with Botafogo],” said Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira. “We’ve been fighting tooth and nail for the same goals, especially over the past two years.”

    Palmeiras vs Botafogo betting tips

Palmeiras and Botafogo are ready to do battle in an all-Brazilian encounter in the USA.

    Palmeiras to win

Botafogo collected more points than Palmeiras in the group stage despite having tougher opponents. Yet Palmeiras are the bookies’ favourites to win this one.

There are good reasons for that. Palmeiras performed better than Botafogo in the Copa Libertadores group stage and they are above them in the Brazilian league too.

Abel Ferreria is a smart tactician and he has an excellent group of players at his disposal.

Botafogo are the reigning Libertadores champions, but they were unable to keep that victorious squad intact.

This will be a hard-fought match and there is unlikely to be much between the two teams. On balance, though, we expect Palmeiras to edge it.

Tip Palmeiras to score any time at 5/4 with Spreadex

    0-0 at half-time

Brazilian football is often described as relentlessly attacking, with entertainment the principal goal. That is a false characterisation.

Winning is the most important thing in Brazil. Playing good football is a secondary concern. As such, important games between two Brazilian teams are often scrappy affairs.

That is likely to be the case at Lincoln Financial Field. There is a danger that the 22 players on the pitch will be so afraid of making a mistake that they are unwilling to take risks.

This should still be an engaging encounter, but we will probably not be treated to a festival of goals in Philadelphia.

In fact, we might have to wait until the second period to see the ball enter the net.

    Estevao to score any time

Every game that Estevao plays for Palmeiras in the knockout stage of the Club World Cup could be his last.

The 18-year-old forward will join Chelsea in July after the London club agreed a deal worth an initial £29m for his signature.

Estevao is a precocious talent. Playing on the right and cutting infield onto his left foot, the teenager is a huge threat in and around the penalty area.

He has scored 11 goals for Palmeiras this season, although he has yet to open his account at this tournament.

Estevao will be desperate to get his name on the scoresheet against Botafogo – and there is a decent chance he will do so.
