Overnight fire at east Austin complex sends one to hospital, AFD says

Austin, Texas (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department said one person was transported to the hospital after a fire in an east Austin apartment early Thursday morning.

The fire happened at the Pathways at Gaston Place on the 1940 block of Gaston Place Drive in the Mueller neighborhood.

According to the City of Austin Housing Authority website, the 100-unit complex is part of its program and serves the elderly, disabled and displaced.

AFD Battalion 6 Capt. Greg Weyant told our crew at the scene that the call for this fire came in around 3 a.m.

He said firefighters observed smoke billowing from a second-story balcony, and once at the affected unit, found all doors and windows shut with a person inside.

Weyant said that person was removed from the apartment and taken to the hospital, but could not specify how the person was injured.

KXAN team members at the fire spoke to neighbors at the scene. According to neighbors, the resident of the affected apartment was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.

Weyant said the second-floor unit, where the fire started, and the unit underneath it sustained water damage as a result of firefighting efforts.

We have reached out to the Austin Police Department and the complex's property managers for any details they can offer about this incident.

AFD says the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
