England pacer Mark Wood has been out of the field ever since his last match against Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The star pacer, who faced another injury setback, might return to the field, as the pacer indicates a tournament, citing his return with the red ball.
As of now, Mark Wood is recovering from a knee injury sustained during the historic loss of England against Afghanistan at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. During radio commentary duties, Wood indicated his desire to be fit before the final test against India at The Oval.
England is hoping to level up their pace deck before the upcoming Ashes, as England aims to win the Ashes for the first time since 2010/11. The recovering English pacer also hinted towards a thorough competition with the renowned Australian pace trio.
Both Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, the two modern-day English pacers who rose to prominence due to their insane pace, are recovering from injuries and are looking forward to a test return.
Jofra Archer, who was recently seen in a County Championship game between Sussex and Durham, has been named in England test side after an absence of around 4 years. On the other hand, Mark Wood played his last test against Sri Lanka last year in 2024.
The bowler also expressed how there are several other bowlers in the England pace deck as well, other than the two injured heads, Archer and Wood.
“I still have that hope. We are running our own race a little bit. He (Archer) is ready to go now, I still have a bit to go and there are plenty of other bowlers around. So I wouldn’t necessarily say it is definitely me and him pencilled in," Wood stated.
“In the pack of bowlers, we don’t want it to feel like we are competing against each other. We want it as a rounded group where it can do damage against India and Australia," said Wood, showing England's intentions for the upcoming test season.
Jofra Archer has been picked for the 2nd Test vs India at Edgbaston
Clearly, it seems that the English pacer who has had a long exile from the longest format of international cricket is eyeing his comeback. ECB have announced England's squad for the 2nd Test vs India wherein, Archer has featured.
In the recently played County Championship match between Sussex and Durham, Archer made a return with the red ball, contributing significantly with the bat down the order and also bowling a spell of 18 overs, picking a wicket and giving away just 32 runs.
Ever since then, it has been speculated over social media channels that the English speedster is eyeing a probable return in England's ongoing test series against India. England has announced their team for the second test match scheduled for the 2nd of July at Edgbaston, and Jofra Archer is back in England's squad for the second test.
