Team India’s T20 World Cup winning captain Rohit Sharma recalled some frightening moments from the final in 2024 where the team emerged victorious. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final to lift the trophy after a gap of 17 years. Ahead of the one year anniversary of their win, Rohit opened up on a couple of heart in the mouth moments for Team India in the marquee clash.
“Was panicking”
Speaking to JioHotstar, Rohit revealed that he was panicking after a top-order collapse in the final at Barbados. The Hitman revealed that he had thought he had let South Africa into the game after India lost early wickets. Sharma credited the lower-order for stepping up on the occasion despite having not batted much in the course of the tournament.
“I was panicking. I wasn’t comfortable. I thought we’d let them into the game. Of course, in the back of my mind, I always believed our lower middle order, although it hadn’t batted much during the tournament, had made an impact whenever given the opportunity,” Rohit Sharma said.
Rohit further credites Axar Patel to be the game-changer for India in the T20 World Cup final. He also heaped praise on Virat Kohli for ensuring that he stuck around till the end.
“Not many people are talking about Axar’s knock, but it was the game-changer. Scoring 47 off 31 at that stage was vital. And we needed one player to bat through the innings, Virat did that brilliantly,” added Rohit.
Sharma had departed for 9 runs while Rishabh Pant was dismissed for zero followed by Suryakumar Yadav for 3 runs. It was Axar who top-scored for the side with a handy 47-run knock off 31 deliveries. On the other hand, Kohli 76 runs off 59 balls before he was dismissed in the last ball of the 19th over.
