Cal Fire’s Wildfire Prevention Grants Program announced that up to $135 million will be available for local projects.

Projects focused on assisting disadvantaged, low-income, disabled or elderly populations will receive priority funding. Additionally, projects that reduce carbon emissions also will be prioritized.

The grant applications are open now and will close at 3 p.m. on Aug. 6. A virtual public workshop explaining the application process and grant requirements will be held from 11 a.m. to noon July 1.

The grant program also will host “office hours” to help applicants each step of the way. For those who can’t make the public workshop or attend office hours, recordings will be available on the program’s website.

Funded projects vary greatly but tend to focus on vegetation management and creating fuel breaks. These are all proactive methods to help communities prepare for fires before they happen.

According to the Cal Fire press release, in 2024 in Sonoma County, 300 acres of shaded fuel breaks, or areas with little to no vegetation, allowed residents to evacuate safely during a brush fire. Firefighters were then able to stop the spread of flames in a timely manner.

“These examples demonstrate how grant funds are effectively helping to improve wildfire resilience in California communities through thoughtful planning and preventative work …” said Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal.

State agencies, Native American Tribes, water districts, nonprofits and city and county agencies are some of the entities eligible for grants.

Grants are reviewed and scored on their ability to reduce wildfire threats for the greatest number of homes or habitable structures in State Responsibility Areas and surrounding communities. State Responsibility Areas are areas where Cal Fire is the primary emergency response agency.

There are also Federal Responsibility Areas and Local Responsibility Areas, all determined by population density, land use and ownership.
