Nowadays, comedian Dax Shepard will be the first to tell you he and Eric Dane are the closest of friends. But in their initial meeting in Alcoholics Anonymous, the two celebrities didn't exactly hit it off, at one point even coming close to blows when a tense argument nearly turned physical.
Speaking with guest Brad Pitt on a recent episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, the 50-year-old Shepard remembered a distinctly testy exchange with Dane during an AA session that almost broke out into violence.
"Eric Dane, who I now f**king love, I have such a sweetness for him," Shepard told Pitt. "But when we first were around each other, it was not good. He threatened a dude in [an AA] meeting, and I said, 'Let's go, motherf**ker.'"
"He goes, 'If you hit that timer again, I'm gonna f**king throw you in that candle,’” the comedian continued, laughing. "And I go, 'That's it, motherf**ker. Let's go. Stand up, let's go outside.' He stands up, we go outside and I'm about to beat the f**k out of him — at an AA meeting, where we're coming for healing and understanding."
Ultimately, the two managed to work out their differences before resorting to physical blows, with Shepard looking back at the incident with a certain degree of warmth and fondness.
"What's great is, we're friends now and we told that story on the podcast and it's quite a hilarious beginning for us, and now I love him," Shepard revealed.
Previously, Dane and Shepard had shared their own version of events on an earlier episode of Armchair Expert, with the Grey's Anatomy star stating, "I was not in the best space, let's just say that."
"I may not have even been sober at the time," Dane continued. "So we’re outside and Dax is like, 'What the f**k was that about, man?' And just as I'm about to open my mouth, our sponsor comes out and gets in between the middle of us."
