Oscar Piastri takes a lead of 22 points into this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix after coming off best in a clash between himself and his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in Canada last time.
A collision between the colleagues and title rivals had been anticipated all season but, this time at least, Piastri’s car was undamaged while Norris immediately accepted the blame and apologised.
A bigger surprise than the coming-together was the fact that the McLaren drivers were not fighting for the lead of the race at the time, as George Russell became the season’s fourth different winner after a dominant weekend.
Russell also won last year’s race in Austria, so can Mercedes double up or will normal service be resumed with McLaren the team to beat?

Austrian Grand Prix betting tips
Lando Norris to win Austrian Grand Prix @ 9/4 Charles Leclerc podium finish @ 12/5 Yuki Tsunoda points finish 7/4Norris tempting at the prices
While Norris once again lost ground to his younger team-mate Piastri in Canada, the Briton had had the upper hand all weekend.
Piastri was unusually off the pace through the preliminaries while Norris was mixing it with Russell and world champion Max Verstappen at the top of the times.
In qualifying, Norris looked to be in the hunt for pole position, only to throw it all away when it mattered most, not for the first time this year.
Norris fought his way up well and would probably have passed Piastri for fourth eventually, but he dived for a gap that wasn’t there and hit the back of his team-mate. Had he started on the front row, as he seemed capable of, he may well have won.
Norris has become expensive to follow this year, but Austria’s Red Bull Ring is among the easiest circuits for overtaking, so all would not be lost even if he doesn’t get the best out of qualifying again.
His repeated disappointments at least mean Norris has drifted to a decent price – decent enough to take the chance that he can reignite his championship challenge this weekend.
Leclerc capable of better
Still winless approaching the halfway point of the season, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was going for a third straight podium finish last time out in Canada.
After missing second practice due to crash damage, Leclerc looked speedy on Saturday but was furious after being held up on his fastest qualifying lap and having to start eighth.
Team-mate Lewis Hamilton also had his result compromised after hitting a groundhog early in the race and damaging aerodynamically important parts of the car, so Ferrari were capable of better than their result of fifth and sixth suggests.
Leclerc has a decent record in Austria with a win and three second places in the last six years, and the Monegasque is a decent bet to return to the rostrum on Sunday.
Tsunoda can prove a point
Yuki Tsunoda is the latest in a string of drivers to look totally out of his depth in the second Red Bull seat alongside Max Verstappen, but he can at least record a top-10 finish at the team’s home race.
The Japanese racer has managed three points finishes from his eight races with the team, but his cause has not been helped by having to start from the back in three of those.
Given a more straightforward run through the preliminaries, the top 10 should be the minimum aim for Tsunoda at a circuit where the Red Bull car traditionally goes well.
