Yashasvi Jaiswal’s slippery slope makes Mohammed Siraj angry as India crumble in IND vs ENG 1st Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal horror day in the field continued into Day 5 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley. The game started well for the left-hander as he stroked a fine century in the 1st innings. However, since then he spilled 4 catches, helping England chase a win in Leeds in the series opener.

Yashasvi Jaiswal drops 4 catches in Headingley nightmare

India’s fielding could well cost them the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Leeds. Despite 5 centuries across the two innings, India are staring at a defeat with England in pole position on Day 5. That is likely down to their sloppy catching throughout the game. The Men in Blue dropped 6 catches in the first innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the biggest culprit. The young Indian opener dropped 3 catches in the first innings, all of Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. In the second innings he handed a reprieve to Ben Duckett on 97 off Mohammed Siraj. Siraj, who bowled well without any luck, was absolutely livid as Jaiswal grassed a straightforward catch. Overall, Jaiswal dropped 4 catches in the IND vs ENG 1st Test, which is the joint most by an India player where records are available.

Why have India dropped so many catches?

India’s 7 dropped catches have handed England a way back and possibly a 1-0 lead in the series. However, catching has been a Achilles heel at Headingley. England were also guilty of dropping 4 catches in the second innings, with both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant earning a reprieve each.

Former England captain Alastair Cook believes Headingley is a hard catching ground due to its steep slope. Cook opined that while he wasn’t sure, the slope adds to the factor. Furthermore, the new stands at the ground make the red Dukes ball hard to spot.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, “The first I’m not so sure about is actually the slope, where the players aren’t used to the slope. The square behind just there is quite a long way above where we are, so whether that makes an impact on where you’re catching it.”

“I think the main reason for this ground in particular, if you look at the stands, there’s a black line, a real dark black line, and if the ball goes into that, I think players miss it a little bit, so you miss picking up just that crucial bit and you panic. When you want to catch, you want firm, hard hands, but also a nice relaxed body. So if you’re missing a little bit and you think ‘where’s the ball gone?’ you panic and you get electric hands,” Cook added at the end of Day 4’s play.
