ALBANY, N.Y. — SUNY schools and other academic institutions in New York State are set to have millions of dollars in research grants restored. It comes after a federal judge ruled against the Trump administration’s cancellation of National Institutes of Health funding.
Last week, the Massachusetts judge ruled that it was unlawful for the administration to cancel hundreds of research grants and said the cuts raised questions about racial discrimination. For some grants designed to study health disparities among racial groups or other groups, they were canceled under the administration’s rollback on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
State Attorney General Letitia James announced on Monday that more than $4.5 million in grants will be restored to SUNY schools, including those designated to research community health. James joined 15 other attorneys general to sue the administration.
James said the judge’s order also reinstates grants in New York to study Alzheimer’s disease in Asian-American and Latino communities, substance abuse risks for LGBTQ+ youth, and cardiovascular disease in the LGBTQ+ community. The order will also restore $3.5 million in funding to create a training center for researchers looking to study health disparities in the Buffalo area.
News10NBC is working to reach out to colleges and universities in the Rochester area to see how the judge’s ruling will impact them.
