President Trump on Monday announced the parameters of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran that he says was “fully agreed” to and will begin to be phased in six hours from now.
Trump expressed confidence that the end of the fighting between the two countries, which he dubbed “the 12 day war” would stick. The announcement came just two days after the U.S. was pulled into the conflict, hitting three nuclear sites in Iran over the weekend.
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted to Truth Social at 6 p.m. EDT, adding that it would begin “in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!”
Trump indicated that Iran would stop the fighting first, followed by Israel and that all fighting would end in a matter of 24 hours.
“During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL,” Trump said.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”
Trump did not outline how the ceasefire was agreed to and which other countries were involved in negotiations between Israel and Iran. Israel was continuing its strikes inside Iran on Monday.
Israel officials did not immediately respond to a request from comment from The Hill on Trump’s announcement.
An Iranian official though told CNN it did not receive a proposal about a ceasefire and will continue to fight.
“At this very moment, the enemy is committing aggression against Iran, and Iran is on the verge of intensifying its retaliatory strikes, with no ear to listen to the lies of its enemies,” the official said.
The president warned that the war could have escalated and had a major impact on the Middle East, but that it will end before reaching that point.
“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!” Trump said.
Trump earlier on Monday had urged “peace and harmony” between Israel and Iran in response to Iran’s attack on the Al Udeid U.S. Air Force base in Qatar, which did not cause any casualties. He urged all sides to stand down in a conflict that pulled the U.S. into attacking Iran’s three nuclear facilities.
“CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!” Trump said earlier on Truth Social post.
Trump also thanked Qatar on Monday for “seeking Peace for the Region.” Following the attack on the base, a spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Qatari air defenses “thwarted the attack and successfully intercepted the Iranian missiles.”
