‘What a move’ – England international told to join Rangers in ‘incredible’ summer transfer

Rangers have been backed as an ideal transfer destination for Aaron Ramsdale ahead of a potential summer exit from Southampton.

talkSPORT’s Darren Bent has welcomed the idea of such a move, but also thinks the goalkeeper is worthy of a Premier League stay.

talkSPORT understands Southampton are open to letting Ramsdale leave on loan this summer.

The 27-year-old is the highest earner on £100,000-per-week at Saints, who were relegated to the Championship in April.

Galatasaray and Rangers are interested in the England international, and Bent believes either club could be worthwhile for him.

“If he leaves here and goes to one of those two clubs… I mean first of all, Galatasaray, with their fanbase, he ain’t getting away from nothing over there,” the ex-Premier League striker said on Drive.

“And even Rangers, their fans, I remember having a conversation with [Jermain] Defoe about how important it is up there, playing for that football club.

“But he just needs to get back playing now, back in the top level of football, get back playing again.”

Host Andy Goldstein then asked him: “Is it a waste, a player like that at such a young age, going to Rangers?”

“No, because it’s a huge football club,” Bent insisted, before adding: “What he won’t want to do is go to a side that could go down again, he doesn’t want that again…

“Going to Rangers, that would be incredible for him, what a move that would be for him.”

Bent also revealed his admiration for Ramsdale when he said: “I like Rambo. Good goalkeeper, been a bit unfortunate, certainly with…

“The Arsenal situation, it was painful because he came in, out of the blue really, when they paid the £24million I think it was. A lot of people raised their eyebrows and went, ‘What?’

“He came in and he was exceptional that first season. He was good up until the moment towards the end when David Raya came in because the one thing people will remember is the Southampton game where he effectively gave the ball to [Carlos] Alcaraz and he scored.

“People always seem to remember that but if you remember some of the saves he made for Arsenal, when he went up to Anfield, Arsenal drew 2-2, hanging on for a point, [Mohamed] Salah.

“Then Leicester, from the free-kick and then the rebound as well, I think he’s a top quality goalkeeper. Yes, unfortunately he’s got the relegations on his CV, but I still think he can play in the Premier League week in, week out.

“I wouldn’t say he’s up there with the best of the best, but there’s no way on the planet you can tell me every single team in the Premier League, he can’t do a job.”

Ramsdale started his career at Sheffield United before completing a permanent move to Bournemouth in 2017.

A spell on loan at Chesterfield saw them relegated from League Two, although he helped keep AFC Wimbledon in League One a year later.

The goalkeeper then made his Premier League debut for the Cherries in the 2019/20 season, but they were relegated to the Championship.

Ramsdale returned to Sheffield United in the following summer, only to face a second consecutive relegation.

Despite this, Arsenal signed him in August 2021 and he went on to make 34 league appearances in his debut campaign.

Another 38 Premier League outings followed as the Gunners finished second behind 2022/23 champions Manchester City.

However, the loan arrival of David Raya from Brentford saw Ramsdale limited to just 11 more appearances in all competitions.

Ramsdale completed a permanent exit from Arsenal last summer by joining Southampton in a £25m deal.

But he conceded 66 goals in 30 league matches as the Saints finished rock-bottom of the Premier League with just 12 points won.

A move to Rangers would likely see Ramsdale compete with Jack Butland for the starting spot at Ibrox.

Butland made 44 appearances for the Gers in all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign, keeping 14 clean sheets.

Furthermore, Ramsdale would reunite with Russell Martin, his former Southampton boss who is now the head coach at Rangers.
