HORNELL, N.Y. – Duane Crespo, a resident of Hornell, has taken an unconventional path in the world of combat sports. Crespo, a former Marine, is now a professional in a new sport called Power Slap.
“Getting slapped in the face that could be a problem for a lot of people. Being a marine, you’re not really all there in the head,” Crespo said.
Crespo stumbled upon Power Slap through a Facebook post seeking professional fighters to try out the sport. Despite his experience in combat sports, Crespo found the prospect of Power Slap intriguing and a bit daunting.
“I thought they were going to try and take my kidney or something,” Crespo said.
Crespo emphasized the safety of Power Slap, describing it as a sport that looks brutal but is actually safe, with medical staff present.
“It’s just three slaps,” Crespo said.
At face value, Power Slap may seem more like an organized chicken fight than a professional sport, but Crespo’s here to tell you that’s wrong.
“Anybody can kick a soccer ball. A three year old could kick a soccer ball. That doesn’t really mean you’re gonna be Lionel Messi at the end of the day,” said Crespo.
Crespo, who boasts a 6-2 record, is very excited about the future of the sport.
“I really thought it was just gonna be two people in a bar slapping each other and we go to the UFC Apex and I’m just like this could be something huge,” Crespo said.
