Scott Miller dead at 62: Tributes paid to highly-respected baseball reporter after brave cancer battle

TRIBUTES have poured in after the tragic announcement that longtime baseball reporter Scott Miller has died at the age of 62.

Miller had covered Major League Baseball for more than 30 years and was a published author.

    He had most recently been a contributor for the New York Times and only last month had appeared on the podcast, The Extra Point, to promote his new book, “Skipper: Why Baseball Managers Matter and Always Will”.

    Miller died following a battle with cancer.

    News of his death was revealed on Saturday evening.

    USA Today MLB columnist Bob Nightengale first shared the heartbreaking news, writing on social media: “Heartbroken to share:Baseball lost a giant. Scott Miller @ScottMillerBbl was a brilliant writer and an even better human.

    “His gift for storytelling embodied his kind soul and heart.

    “I loved him, and so did all blessed to know him.

    “Please keep Kim, Gretchen, and family in prayer.”

    The MLB released a statement, saying: “Tonight we remember Scott Miller – a true gentleman, a class act, and an expert of his craft who loved our National Pastime. 

    “We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones and his readers throughout the game.”

    Miller had begun his career working as a beat reporter for the St Paul Pioneer Press.

    He later went on to work for outlets including CBS Sport, Bleacher Report, MLB Network Radio and the Los Angeles Times.

    Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal described him as a “great writer and an even better person”.

    He added: “He was endlessly kind and upbeat.

    “Our hearts go out to his wife, Kim and his daughter, Gretchen.

    “We love you, Scott.”

    ESPN analyst Jeff Passan also paid tribute, saying: “This is so awful.

    “Scott Miller was as nice of a guy as you’d find in the press box — and a very talented writer to boot.

    “A sad, sad day.”
