Najmul Hossain Shanto shocks BCB, set to step down as Bangladesh Test captain

Bangladesh National Cricket Team skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto is all set to walk away from captaincy following the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Najmul Hossain Shanto is reportedly firm on his decision to step down as the Test captain.

The 25-year-old left-hander has been leading the Test side through a challenging period. It is being said that Najmul has already sent an official letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) informing them of his decision to step down as the Test captain.

Discussions between the BCB and Shanto are expected soon, but Najmul is reportedly not likely to change his mind. Whether the announcement will be made immediately after the final Test in Colombo or at a later time will depend on the outcome of the discussion.

A source close to Shanto was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “I think he will not continue as Test captain after the Test series against Sri Lanka. I have known him for a long time, and as far as I understand, he is not happy with everything that is going on around him.”

Meanwhile, Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to step down from his role after the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, after a sudden and surprising move by the BCB. Actually, the BCB removed Shanto as Bangladesh’s ODI captain without any warning, which made him consider quitting Test captaincy.

Najmul Hossain Shanto shocked at being removed as ODI captain

Najmul had been leading the team in Tests and ODIs after giving up the T20I captaincy to focus on his batting. He had clearly told the board that he wanted to continue in both formats. But earlier this month, the BCB held an emergency Zoom meeting on June 12 and named Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new ODI captain for one year without discussing it with Najmul first.

The news came as a huge shock. Najmul Hossain Shanto was about to meet Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons to plan for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. But before that meeting could happen, BCB cricket operations chairman Nazmul Abedin called and told him that he was no longer ODI captain.

Najmul was left embarrassed and hurt. He didn’t attend the meeting with Simmons, who was waiting to discuss the squad. To make things worse, Najmul had already spoken to a few players about their roles for the Sri Lanka ODIs, as he was expecting to lead the side.

Najmul Hossain Shanto wasn’t upset: BCB President breaks silence on ODI captaincy drama

Najmul has already informed some of his close contacts and is expected to officially tell the board soon. However, the BCB president, Aminul Islam, said that Najmul was not upset about being removed as ODI captain. He claimed that Najmul accepted the decision calmly and handled the situation politely when he was told about it.

Aminul was quoted as saying in Bangla Daily Kaler Kantho, “Coming to Shanto's point, his captaincy was not taken away; rather, the decision was taken with everyone's consent in the board. We decided to have a new and different plan. As we are currently playing lots of matches of all formats, we wanted to go with three different captains.

As Litton and Shanto are captaining the T20 and Test sides, respectively, and Shanto is performing well in Tests, we thought that if Miraz leads the ODI side, Shanto will concentrate better in other formats. It was the board's policy decision.

"It was our plan that one of us would talk to Shanto. That person later reported that he did his job and Shanto received the decision quite cordially. Maybe the situation went differently because of some false news and misunderstanding. To conclude, there are two sides to this situation: the decision was taken with the consent of everyone on the board, and Shanto took it sportingly.”
