Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller is letting the college baseball world know the Chanticleers’ displeasure with the NCAA.
In the 1st inning of Sunday’s College World Series Finals Game 2, Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and 1st base coach Matt Schilling were both ejected. Fans and media members were stunned that the decision would be made so early in a game with championship implications.
The NCAA says Schnall continued to argue balls and strikes after receiving a warning. Schnall says he made 1 comment after confirming a warning had been issued and was immediately ejected.
Miller says the NCAA needs to do better and the Chanticleers feel robbed of not having leadership when their season was on the line.
The ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and assistant coach Matt Schilling in the bottom of the first inning drastically altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team,” Miller’s statement reads. “These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run.
“This is not about a single call – it’s about process and professionalism. In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, out program and its student-athletes deserved better. The NCAA must re-evaluate how it trains, assigns and review umpires in championship environments.
“We expect consistency, communication and the same level of excellence from our officials that we demand of our teams. Out players have represented this university, this conference, and college baseball with integrity and heart. They deserved the opportunity to compete for a national championship with their leaders and were denied that opportunity.
Schnall and Schilling face NCAA suspensions, which would have applied to a Game 3 in the CWS Finals.
