Jay Johnson is winning championships at a legendary pace in his relatively young LSU tenure. With Sunday’s College World Series win, Johnson made some history.
As the Tiger skipper, Johnson has now won 2 national championships in just 4 seasons. He’s the fastest to multiple titles at a school in college baseball history.
“I’m just so proud. This is a team. Our motto for the year was ‘Tough and Together,’ and that’s what they did from Aug. 26 until now. I’m just incredibly proud,” Johnson said on the ABC broadcast after the game.
“It’s only 12 returning players. It’s 10 players from the transfer portal. It’s 2 (junior college) players and 10 freshmen. And that collection of talent not just became a team, but became a family.”
Johnson arrived at LSU in 2022 from Arizona, where he posted a 208-114 record with the Wildcats, taking them to the College World Series twice (2016, ’21). At LSU, Johnson is now 190-77 over 4 seasons.
In all 4 seasons under Johnson, the Tigers have reached the NCAA Tournament. Twice they have exited during an NCAA Regional, and twice they have won it all.
With the Tigers having won 2 of the last 3 national championships, Johnson’s 2026 team is sure to have its sights set on making LSU baseball a dynasty.
