First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for three-day heatwave

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Today is day one of three for the heatwave that will envelop much of the eastern half of the United States. Temperatures this morning were in the lower 80s, with muggy air and a few passing showers. A decent breeze was brought on thanks to the strong storms that passed through to our east overnight. Chances for showers continue through the morning, then skies will clear as heat and humidity rises to dangerous levels.

All of Western New York is under a Heat Advisory from noontime today to Tuesday 6pm, as heat index values will reach the triple digits all three days. Limit outdoor time, stay cool, and stay hydrated. Check in on neighbors and vulnerable individuals. If you do go outside, wear light colored clothing. Nighttime air will offer little relief with lows in the mid 70s and very muggy air.

The high pressure ridge causing this heatwave will sink south on Wednesday, which brings a frontal boundary into the area where showers and thunderstorms will form due to the boundary funneling in moisture up from the Gulf. Due to the stubborn nature of this ridge, we’ll stay in this wet frontal boundary for several days. A low pressure system moves through on Friday, bringing additional rain. We’ll continue to track the chances for showers and thunderstorms to see how they might impact plans for next weekend. Stay tuned to News10 NBC for the latest First Alert Weather updates.
