Crowd attacks DCFS vehicle during murder arrest, thinking it’s an immigration operation

A Department of Children and Family Services vehicle was vandalized by a crowd that mistakenly thought sheriff’s deputies were conducting an immigration raid in the South Los Angeles area, officials said Saturday.

The encounter took place about 10:15 a.m. Monday as detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were serving a search and arrest warrant on the 900 block of East 49th Street near McKinley Avenue.

The warrant was related to an ongoing criminal investigation involving 21-year-old Lyla Avila, the LASD told City News Service. Avila was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact, and her child was taken into protective custody by the DCFS.

She was the sole individual arrested at the location, authorities said.

“During the warrant operation, several residents mistakenly believed that the detectives were involved in federal immigration enforcement activities. Some began shouting at deputies on scene, and a small group formed near a DCFS vehicle,” according to an LASD statement. “A DCFS vehicle was vandalized and sustained damage. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of everyone involved, deputies requested assistance from nearby patrol stations to assist with escorting personnel safely from the area,” the statement continued.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the arrest was “solely related to an ongoing murder investigation and unrelated to any federal immigration operation.”
