England stars and Indian dressing room visibly wince as Ben Duckett inadvertently injures Harry Brook

Members of the Indian dressing room were left visibly uncomfortable when Ben Duckett accidentally hurt Harry Brook.

England and India are facing each other at Headingley in the first of a five-match Test series, and the visitors are flying.

With Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant well set, Duckett attempted to get a run-out.

The ball had been edged by Pant off Shoaib Bashir beyond Brook to Duckett.

The England opener instinctively picked up the ball and rifled it as hard as he could towards the stumps.

However, Brook was stationed in leg-slip and was in the direct path of the ball.

It smashed into his ribs and left him in a heap.

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was stunned, while those in the Indian dressing room also knew just how painful that was.

KL Rahul was one of those who could be seen visibly wincing.

Duckett couldn’t believe what had happened while Brook was left in some serious pain.

Thankfully, he was able to pick himself up off the floor and rush off to receive some treatment.

He wasn’t actually off the field for that long before returning, so he’s avoided any major problem.

Everyone in the dressing room knew how painful that was

Speaking about it on talkSPORT’s commentary, Neil Manthorp said: “There has been a throw at the stumps, and it’s hit Harry Brook.

“He’s taken a blow on the back, and he’s going to rush off.

    “Hopefully, it’s just a graze.”

However, it was a moment that summed up England’s struggles.

Ben Stokes won the toss on the first day and elected to bowl first.

This is because the statistics suggest that teams who field in the opening innings at Headingley usually win.

But the conditions were perfect for batting, with bright sunshine and clear skies, and India took full advantage.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his first century in England before new captain Shubman Gill dismissed any doubts over his form and slammed home a 100 as well.

That left India on 359-3 at the close of play on day one, and things continued in similar fashion on the morning of day two.

Rishabh Pant joined Jaiswal and Gill in scoring a century as India pile on the runs and the misery.

But England have managed to come back into the Test.

Pant and Gill are out, and the hosts stand a chance of keeping the visitors below 500.

All being well, Brook will be able to bat as England look to chase down and surpass a huge score.
