Broadcaster forced to apologise as Chelsea legend deliver x-rated Nicolas Jackson rant

DAZN presenter Kelly Somers apologised to viewers after an X-rated and scathing assessment from John Obi Mikel on Nicolas Jackson.

Mikel was on punditry duty as Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Flamengo in what was a Club World Cup capitulation.

The Blues led after 13 minutes but Flamengo scored two quick-fire goals in the second half before gaining a one-man advantage.

Jackson was shown a straight red card for his dangerous tackle on Ayrton Lucas, just four minutes after he came onto the pitch.

Mikel, who won two Premier League titles and the Champions League at Chelsea, was fuming with the striker during post-match coverage.

“Unbelievable. Stupid, stupid, stupid mistake you can make,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going through his head.

“You come into the game, you’re 2-1 down at that point. You come in and your team needs you, we need to get back into the game, and he does that.

“He did that in the league game at Newcastle. Again, a very important game where we need to win to qualify for the Champions League.

“He did that, he got a red card. Now he’s come in again, he’s done this. You can’t keep making mistakes.”

Somers then asked if it was linked to Jackson’s frustration with not starting the match, with Liam Delap given the nod instead.

But Chelsea icon Mikel replied: “I don’t care what his frustration is, it’s a massive football club, Chelsea Football Club, and it’s about competition.

“If you’re angry, if you’re p***** off that Delap has come into the football club and he’s going to be the competition with you, you have to embrace it as a player.

“If you’re a big player, embrace it, because the only way we can be successful, we can win trophies, is when we compete against each other.

“If the competition is there, we can become successful together as a team and win trophies.”

Somers then issued an apology for the language used by Mikel, who was left visibly unhappy with the result.

Jackson has scored 30 goals and assisted another 12 in 80 matches for Chelsea since his £32million move from Villarreal in 2023.

Friday’s match was not the first time that the Senegal international drew criticism from Mikel for his performance.

After Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening day of the season, Mikel found fault with the 24-year-old’s finishing.

Jackson then scored in the Blues’ 6-2 thrashing of Wolves a week later and clapped back at the former midfielder on social media.

“Shut your mouth, don’t talk s***t, we are killing ourselves for Africa,” he passionately said on his Instagram story.

Mikel then claimed in January that Jackson is not a striker who is able to guide Chelsea to a Premier League title.

He also said: “I think he can get us to the top four, but I don’t think he can get us over the line in terms of winning trophies.”

Jackson assisted Pedro Neto in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC at the Club World Cup.

His new strike-rival Delap, who signed earlier in the month in a £30m move from Ipswich Town, also teed up Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea meet Esperance de Tunis in their final group stage match on Wednesday, live on talkSPORT.

They must at least draw against the Tunisian side to progress to the last 16.
