Young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan failed to live up to the hype and expectations as the debutant fell into the trap of Ben Stokes before the lunch break on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England at the Headingley Stadium in Leeds.
After Brydon Carse got rid of steady KL Rahul, the stage was set for Sai Sudharsan to shine on the set platform, but the youngster failed to make the most of the opportunity that was given ahead of the likes of seasoned campaigner Abhimanyu Easwaran.
England captain Ben Stokes has brought a timely breakthrough for the hosts by removing the Indian debutant for a duck with a clever setup. Sai Sudharsan's dismissal came after a well-executed plan by the hosts.

They targeted the left-hander’s pads with a tight line, placing a leg slip and later adding a leg gully to build pressure. Sai, who was clearly aware of the fielders lurking behind on the leg side, looked hesitant to play his usual flick.
But on his fourth ball, the 23-year-old batter couldn’t resist and ended up glancing at one fine. The ball brushed the bat and flew to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who took a neat catch to his right, and Sai had to walk back even without opening his account after facing just four balls.

After his dismissal, Indian cricket fans have been feeling sad for Sai, with some blaming the PR pressure for the batter’s duck on his Test debut in England. Some fans are taking a dig at the Indian debutant by saying he got to know the difference between Tests and IPL in a tough way.

Meanwhile, India started the first session strongly but lost momentum right before lunch as England struck twice in quick succession in Leeds. The Indian openers handled the challenging conditions well early on, with the ball swinging and seaming off the pitch.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal showed great patience, left the ball smartly, and punished the loose deliveries to build a solid opening stand of 91 runs off 151 balls against England. Rahul looked in fine touch, and England bowlers struggled to find a breakthrough against India.
But just as India looked set for a dominant session, Brydon Carse got Rahul to chase a wide outswinger, resulting in a catch at first slip as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring 42 runs off 78 balls. Soon after, Sudharsan Swas dismissed for a duck by Ben Stokes, who had set a clever trap with a packed leg-side field. He was caught down the leg side while trying to glance the ball, leaving India at 92/2 by lunch on Day 1 of the ongoing Headingley Test.
