Belgium to spend €550m building a ‘military district’
Belgium’s Ministry of Defence plans to spend €550m on a new military district near the Walloon city of Charleroi, newspaper L’Echo reports.

A 27ha site will be developed in the city for different departments of the Ministry of Defence.

The project will involve building magazines for ammunition and hangers and workshops to store and maintain Leopard 2 tanks and F-35 fighters.

Facilities will also include outdoor and indoor training areas, a “simulation complex”, and a shooting range.

The government added that there would be a cyber warfare component, a primary care centre and a nursery. Additionally, it will offer accommodation, sports facilities and hospitality services. Some 1,500 people will work there.

The project is part of a programme set in motion by the previous government, led by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, to upgrade military facilities in Flanders and Charleroi.

In Charleroi, the government is about to begin the tendering process, with the aim of signing contracts before the end of the year and breaking ground in 2027.

These districts are intended to extend the economic benefits of garrisons to areas that have high levels of unemployment and no military presence.
