Shubman Gill has been in the headlines ever since he landed on English soil for his debut Test as India's captain. However, before the five-match Test series opener in Leeds on June 20, fans are grilling Shubman Gill for flipping on his perspective after becoming India’s Test captain.
The 25-year-old batter is all set to lead the new era in Indian Test cricket after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Gill has already been leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL for the past couple of years, but he is currently facing a much bigger challenge, as he is set to make his Test captaincy debut in England, where India has not won a Test series for the last 17 years.
Ahead of the first Test against England at Leeds, the right-handed batter addressed the media with clarity and confidence. When he was asked whether winning an IPL title or a Test series in England holds more significance, the young India captain’s response went round on social media.

The Punjab lad said that leading India to a Test series win in England will be a greater achievement than lifting an IPL trophy. He explained that opportunities to win a Test series in the SENA countries are rare, unlike the IPL, which comes around every year.
Shubman Gill said at the pre-match press conference, “Definitely the Test series, in my opinion. You know, you don't get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England, maybe two, if you are the best of your generation, maybe three.
IPL comes every year, and you get to go have a crack at it every year. So, in my opinion, winning a test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa is bigger.”
Shubman Gill’s changing stance on IPL sets internet on fire
Now, Gill’s statement is going viral on social media ahead of the first Test against England in Leeds. Actually, he was part of the Gujarat Titans’ IPL-winning squad in the 2022 season, and at that time, the star batter had made a bold remark on the title triumph.
Gill, who also won the under-19 World Cup, had claimed that the ‘IPL triumph was as big as winning the World Cup’ for him, and now, after becoming India captain, he has given a contrary statement, which caught the cricket fans’ attention. Now, for him, a Test series win is bigger than an IPL triumph.
Now, they are mocking the Indian skipper for changing his stance with the time and position. However, some corrected that Gill was talking about the under-19 World Cup and urged the critics to stop making propaganda against the youngster. While some fans are calling Gill a ‘joker,’ some are labeling the youngster the next ‘Sourav Ganguly’ and Mohammad Rizwan.

Shubman Gill delays Playing XI decision due to dry English summer
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill said the Indian team has delayed finalizing their playing XI due to the unusually dry summer in England. He mentioned that the weather has been different this time, so they decided to take a final look at the pitch before making a decision on the playing XI in Leeds.
Gill noted, “We actually were waiting; this summer has been a little bit different from the other English summers, and it's been a little bit dry. I was just waiting to see the wicket one last time to see the final combinations and decide on that.”
